چکیده

The environmental issues concerning uranium mining and milling have long been paid considerable attention in wide aspects in the world [1–4]. It is well known that the industrial activities of mining and milling of uranium ores can lead to release of a tremendous amount of radioactive pollutants (wastewater and tailings, as representative carrier) that consist typically of U and Th compounds. Also, the unintended stacking of uranium ores and waste rocks in surface environment would result in leaching of U and Th under weathering and meteorological conditions. Once being improperly treated, these radioactive pollutants can directly transfer to the environmental media, posing a signifi cant threat to the ecosystem and public health in the light of their radioactivity, toxicity, accumulation in the food chain and long-term persistence in nature [5–7]. In the context of increased demand for uranium resulting from skyrocketing development of nuclear power plants in China, it is encouraged to carry out investigation on uranium-induced pollution and remediation strategy. In the present study, a large granitic-type uranium deposit in Guangdong, China, was selected, whose mining and milling activities commenced from 1960s. After 50 years of operation, Preliminary results of spatial distribution of uranium and thorium in soil profi les near a uranium industrial site, Guangdong province, China Jin Wang, Juan Liu, Yongheng Chen, Gang Song, Diyun Chen, Tangfu Xiao, Huosheng Li, Chunlin Wang, Feng Jiang

Natural Radioactivity in Miscanthus floridulu Plant from the Uranium Tailing Pile at Guangdong, South China

Large amounts of uranium waste rocks and tailings resulting from the exploitation and treatment of uranium ore at the Northern Guangdong mine (South China) have been accumulated in dams (tailing ponds). To reduce the dispersion of natural radionuclides into the environment, some dams were revegetated with arbor, bush and sward. Besides these plants, Miscanthus floridulu is the dominant plant gr...

Post monsoon spatial distribution of uranium in water of Alaknanda and Ganges river

Background: Uranium poses both chemical and radiological hazard to the living system. Drinking water from river is one of the major sources of uranium intake. Dissolution of minerals, washout from rain water, rock-water interaction, agricultural run off, and industrial disposals are some of the sources of uranium in river water system. Present study was aimed to determine the uranium in the wat...

محاسبات مصرف سوخت و پارامترهای نوترونیک مربوط به رآکتورهای آب سنگین تحقیقاتی با سوخت اورانیوم- توریوم توسط کد MCNPX

One of the main characteristics of heavy water research reactors is their high production of plutonium. This work demonstrates the possibility of reduction of plutonium production and other actinides in heavy water research reactors. Among the many ways for reducing plutonium production in a heavy water reactor, in this research, changing the fuel from natural uranium to thorium-uranium mixed f...

Investigation of the required thickness of thorium spent fuel lead transport cask depending on different fuel burnups and cooling times

Thorium fuels have attracted researcher’s attention due to the reduction of uranium deposits in the world, more abundances than uranium, and the ability to be breeding in thermal and fast reactors. This study aimed to investigate the radiation safety and the amount of necessary shielding for the transportation of spent thorium fuel in the Tehran Research Reactor. The ORIGEN and MCNPX computatio...

Configurational analysis of uranium-doped thorium dioxide

While thorium dioxide is already used industrially in high temperature applications, more insight is needed about the behaviour of the material as part of a mixed-oxide (MOX) nuclear fuel, incorporating uranium. We have developed a new interatomic potential model, commensurate with a prominent existing UO2 potential, to conduct configurational analyses of uranium-doped ThO2 supercells. Using th...
